Searching For Warrant Records

If you are looking to search New Hanover County public records, then there are two main options available to you. You can go down to the county building or county clerk office to search for warrants or you can use one of the online resources that can now be found on the Internet. The online search methods are very convenient because you are able to conduct the search right from your home computer.

What usually happens when people want to search for records of a criminal arrest is that they will try to find out where the warrant was issued. One way to do this is to call the local police station where the arrest was made and ask them if they have information about an arrest warrant. Most of the time, if they do not know, then you will have to search online or in the county’s courthouses to see if they have any records on file for the person you are investigating. It is also possible that they may not have any information at all and if that is the case then you will need to hire an investigator to follow up on your search.

Another option is to go online to do a criminal background check. This is something that you may want to do before hiring someone to work for you or before asking them to accompany you on a date. There are many websites that can do a free criminal background check by entering a persons name into the search box. Enter the information the website has and then click the “search” button. You should receive some information back, but depending on what website you use, it may not be complete.

New Hanover County, North Carolina state law provides the authority to a sheriff or other law enforcement officer to issue a warrant to a person if they have reasonable suspicion to believe that the person committed a criminal offense within the jurisdiction of the State of North Carolina. A warrant can only be issued for a specific crime. A warrant will typically be used for felony arrest and it will say on the warrant that the person who was arrested shall forthwith surrender his/her signature to the court and the warrant will be carried out.

People that are arrested for DUI can obtain access to their warrant records relatively quickly by going online. If the person doesn’t have access to internet, they can call their local law enforcement agency and they can go to the courthouse to get the information. If the person doesn’t want to go through the hassle of going to court, there are free online resources available to them. These are more time consuming and may not yield the same information.

You should keep in mind that warrant records are considered public record so all searches will result in public exposure of the information. The penalties for violating North Carolina public records laws include a fine up to one thousand dollars and/or suspension of a public office license. Performing a warrant search is not intended to disclose confidential information, but it is helpful to find out if someone has an outstanding warrant.
