Jail Public Access Records

You may have heard that Bexar County, Texas does not have a public jail records database. Many people assume that if they are convicted of a crime they will be forced to disclose their jail records. That is not the case. If you are arrested for a crime and your case is reviewed by the courts then your jail record will be made public. However, it will not be readily available to the general public.

This is because access to jail records is considered to be in the public domain. In other words you can freely publish this information to the public. But because of privacy concerns many people do not wish to make their jail records available to the public. Therefore, they search for and obtain criminal history records from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). The DPS has limited access to inmate public information such as booking photos. This means that jail records cannot be obtained directly from the DPS.

Jail records can be requested from prisons, state correction departments, or through the Texas Privacy of Information Act. When requesting these records you will need to fill out an application and then pay a nominal fee. When you retrieve the records they will contain information such as the persons name and current address, any criminal convictions, date of arrest, case type, case number and additional information. Information contained in the report is considered true and accurate even though it is stored on state deposit.

If you need to see jail records in another state then there are other ways to do this. There are two types of legal access to this criminal history information. The first is through a request for information from the state department of corrections which is free. The second is through a request made to a state court judge who is responsible for prison inmate records. Jail records in Texas are not supposed to be released to the public but the court will usually grant an exception when the person is definitely indigent.

Both these records can be obtained legally by paying a nominal fee. Jail records that are public access can be requested by visiting your local state office where the crime was committed, or by visiting the appropriate state department. Jail public access records can also be requested through online services. You can choose to search through many different public records databases which give you access to national, state, county and local criminal history record databases. These databases are very reliable because they are frequently updated and are 100% confidential.

Jail records can be used for many reasons such as checking on a new potential employee, running a background check on a new boyfriend or girlfriend, or catching a repeat offender. Many times people want to hire someone and if the person has a previous criminal past they will perform a jail background check to ensure they are not going to be a repeat offender. Jail records can also help you learn more about a new neighbor or new employee at your business. When you use an online service you can access millions of different records including jail records from all over the country which can provide you with valuable information. These types of records are useful in any situation so whether you need to conduct a public record search or a confidential employee background search, jail public access records are an easy way to get what you need.
