Jail Records – How to Find Public Jail Records
The Freedom of Information Act guarantees the right to see all government files, including public jail records. In many instances the government is more concerned with releasing the information than keeping it secure. Recently we learned from an acquaintance in McMinn County that there are no public jail records available for offenders who have served their jail time. We also found out that anyone who has been convicted of a felony can have their jail records expunged if they pay a nominal fee.
That piece of news was not surprising to us. When we were investigating how to find sex offender records, we found that the state of Tennessee does not keep national databases of sex offenders. Only local county criminal justice agencies are allowed to do so. Therefore, in order to find these types of records you will either have to go down to your local courthouse or hire an agency to do it for you. Even though hiring an agency can be expensive it can often save you time by ensuring the accuracy of the information you receive.
To find these records online you need to find an established agency that has done this type of search before. Many are paid to do this type of investigation and they will have access to the databases. To ensure you find accurate information pay a small fee.
There are some limitations to these searches. First, the searches are only current as far as the county you are requesting the records for. They are not current for federal, state, or other local public records. However, the fee is minimal and well worth the effort. If you are looking for a divorce record or a birth record, you can easily get the information you are seeking.
Before you can start searching you will need to have the name of the person you are searching for. They jail or prison facility where the offender may be placed is called a pen register. Jail registers are essentially a goldmine of information. If you know the person’s last name and where they may be incarcerated you can find out anything you want. Jail records can tell you what crimes they were convicted of and sometimes what time in jail they were held.
The database search can be done for free at various websites, but you must pay for it if you want the premium information. The premium information is comprised of all jail records in the country. It is easy to find public jail records by using an agency that is known as a public records database.
