What Are Marriage Records?

There are many places in North and South Carolina that house public records of marriages. These records are often made by the county, the marriage occurred in and may be found in the Courthouse, Records Office or Marriage Records Division of the state or county. Marriage records have a lot of information, such as when the marriage occurred, the names of the bride and groom and the parents of the bride and groom, the names of those officiating the ceremony and more. Some states also have the records online for easier searching, although you’ll still have to go to the actual location of where they are physically located in order to access the marriage records.

It is important to know that marriage records are considered public information and are readily available to anyone who requests them. You can request these records from the county courthouse in your county, or from the Department of Revenue in your state (depending on whether your state has a Department of Taxation). However, certain information contained in the record may not be freely available to the general public and/or to other licensed professionals unless you have a legitimate reason for accessing it. Marriage Records in Florence County is a perfect example of this because they are amongst the most requested of all and are also among the most stored.

There are several reasons why one may want to obtain marriage records. If you are considering marrying someone overseas, you will need to ensure that they were legally married in their country of origin before you travel there. Similarly, if you are considering someone for work or for friendship purposes, you may need to establish their identity beyond doubt. In addition, if you are involved with genealogical research, you may require documentation of your relationship history to ensure that the person you are related to is indeed the person stated in your family tree.

Most counties today have Marriage Records available on their respective web sites, and most also provide the information in an easily readable format. Typically you’ll be asked for information such as the name of the couple, their parents’ names and their place of marriage. Some counties allow you to search for free and some charge a small fee. The cost is likely determined by the information that you need and the level of detail that you wish to view. You may also be able to view more than one record on one screen.

If you have access to your county’s Marriage Records, you can then perform a Marriage Records lookup online. There are literally hundreds of websites that offer this service. However, not all of them are worth your time, especially those that claim to offer absolutely free searches. This is because free marriage searches only pull up public records in the area that you live in, not international marriage records. In order to get a comprehensive search you may have to pay a minimal fee.

It is important to know that marriage records are confidential and held privately between a legal authority and the individual who files it. They are meant to stay private so that the general public has no knowledge of their existence. Unless the information provided on these sites is well-researched or if you are looking for something completely private such as maiden names, past marriage information and criminal history, you should be prepared to pay for any search that you conduct on marriage records.
