Leake County, Mississippi is one of the poorest counties in the state. This poor county is located in northeastern Mississippi, just east of Lake Itasca. When Hurricane Andrew tore through the area, many elderly and disabled people were evacuated to northern Tennessee, far away from the dangerous destruction that could befall their communities if evacuation wasn’t rushed. Unfortunately, they remained in those camps for months, as county officials worked with agencies in other areas to locate them. Eventually those officials made it their mission to turn their information over to the public.
Government agencies were required to maintain public records, but the problem was that they often did not have the time or the resources to do so. In some cases, they even lost records, which created a huge gap in the information that was available. Because of the time constraints that resulted from these factors, jail records were only released to those who had a legitimate need for them, which left those without medical concerns waiting while the jail system searched for their records. That resulted in the slow release of jail records for those who had committed crimes that would prevent them from qualifying for public assistance, or who were criminals themselves.
Thankfully, the Mississippi State Open Records Act has made all of the state’s public records available to the general public. Anyone can go to the Secretary of State’s website and access full access to public jail records. They are now searchable online on a wide variety of subjects, including criminal convictions, warrants for arrest, misdemeanors, felonies and sex offenses. In addition to being able to read about any public jail records that may be relevant, you can also get a certified copy and send it to yourself or someone else.
Those who need to look up jail records and other public information can contact the Mississippi State Open Records Office, which is the main office responsible for maintaining these databases. By law, the office is required to provide these records to anyone who requests them within 14 days. If you need to find out someone’s jail records, for whatever reason, you’ll be able to find them online for free. However, there are many cases where the state does not give out jail records freely. You’ll have to either pay a nominal fee to get the information, or work a little bit harder to find it.
There are still times when the state may choose to charge a small fee for access to their records. For example, if a case is considered sensitive and confidential, they will usually charge a small fee. The information you can receive can range from court cases to felony charges, arrest warrant reports, inmate records, and more. There are many different ways to get this information, but you’ll still be able to get a free look at most of it. The only thing you may not be able to access is sex offender records.
Whatever your reasons for needing to find out jail records, you’ll be happy to know that the process is easier than ever. It used to take days or weeks to complete the search process, but today it takes minutes. All you have to do is pay a one-time fee, and you’ll have instant access to everything you could ever need. Access to jail records is now as easy as clicking your mouse.
