Jail Records Are Available For Free Online

Turner County Jail, established in 1832, and named after General Robert Turner, is one of the finest historical lockups in the nation. Turner County is located in what was then what is known as Peach County in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The original purpose of the jail was to construct a fort and armory for the troops stationed at Fort Ridge. Today, the lockup houses the prison records of more than two hundred men, women, and children.

Turner County is the eastern portion of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The area is bordered on two sides by the mountains of the Piedmont. The first settlement in the area was built by General Peter Thomas himself. He built what is today referred to as the Ashburn Jail, a large confederate prison camp where he gathered his troops. The jail cells were constructed by prisoners of war who were held there until their trial or disposition.

The jail records at Ashburn are considered to be public record. However, access to them is limited. Most counties across the United States have free access to public jail records. However, some states, such as Georgia, ban the public access to jail records. If you are interested in accessing the records in this state, you may contact the State Vital Records Office in Atlanta.

There are other methods of getting the information you are looking for regarding a jail background check. For instance, the Department of Corrections has free online databases that contain various inmate records. Another option is to contact your local court house or law office. They will usually give you a call to get more information.

The Freedom of Information Act guarantees that the public has free access to government information. These government records are usually easy to find. They are available in several different formats including microfiche and CD-ROM. However, they are often difficult to search for, especially if you want information from an agency other than the government. This can be frustrating because you want to find out information about a friend, family member or even a potential employee.

Another option is to use one of the free online inmate locating services. They can pull jail records and criminal history information from all across the country. You can search using names or using a variety of criteria including location, sex, inmate number, inmate name, case type, case date, district and county, state and county, inmate number, birth date and many others. An online search will usually give you results within minutes.
