How To Make Your Home Safe From Burglars

Home security

Burglars can target any home irrespective of how big or small it is or where it is located. The only way your home can be spared is if you have put in place the best home security systems and measures. A well-secured home is not easily accessible to burglars and trespassers as compared to a poorly secured property. Most burglars will not risk breaking into a home with hi-tech security systems as these systems will most likely notify the homeowner and neighbors of the ongoing break-in.

First things first

The foremost home security aspect you need to put into consideration is to ensure that all door locks especially those on the main doors are working perfectly. The majority of home break-ins are made easy and possible by faulty door locks that do little to prevent a burglar from gaining access into the home. In addition to this, you should never leave doors including garage doors and windows unlocked even when you are in the house. Always ensure that you hide your door key in a place that it cannot be found easily especially outside the house.

Make your home look occupied at all times

Burglars are always prying on homes that appear to be unoccupied. Install automatic light timers to turn on your home’s lights at a specific time preferably in the evening when it starts getting dark. There are some hi-tech timers that come with on-off cycles to put on and off lights systematically in the house at different intervals as an indication of movement in the house. You can also leave music playing in the house and at the same time lower your phone’s ringing volume so that someone on the outside does not hear it ring and realize that you are not in the house.

If you are going away for a long time, have a trusted person pick your mails and other deliveries to your house. This is because piling mails and deliveries in your mail box or at your gate can be a clear indication that you are not at home. This can be a perfect go ahead for a burglar to break into your home as it is evident that you may not have been around for quite a long time. Additionally, have your driveway, grass lawn and flower beds around your house attended to regularly. An untidy home can also be a giveaway that you are not at home.

You can install glass-break security sensors in your home to set off alarms once a burglar tries to break a door glass or a window pane in your house. However, these systems may be quite expensive and as such, not affordable and sustainable to most homeowners. Always ensure that you familiarize with your immediate neighbors and request them to watch your home for you while you are away.
