Why Do Police Look Up Warrants?

Warrant Records in Spartanburg County are maintained by the sheriffs office and are a part of the public domain. All warrants that have been issued in the state of South Carolina are kept in the clerk of courts office. In the case of traffic violations these records may be forwarded to the Department of Public Safety for use in licensing and tracking. Most traffic violations result in a citation, which is then forwarded to the circuit court and a warrant is issued.

Warrant records are filed in the county where the violation took place and are used to track down those who were involved in criminal activities. Warrants are also important to law enforcement agencies as well as other organizations. Warrant searches are done on people who have been accused of crimes by law enforcement agencies. Warrants can be issued based on any number of reasons and are also used in the case of missing persons and stolen property.

Warrant records are available online. You can perform an online search to find the information you are looking for. Many records are free but some require a fee. Performing a record search online will save you money by not requiring you to physically go to the courthouse or county clerk’s office. If you pay a fee you will get more detailed information than if you had no cost access to this data.

Many of the public warrant records can be accessed online. In some counties a request must be filed in court before the records will be released. In some instances public access to these records is only allowed for a short period of time. If the person you are checking up on has had their warrant records checked against their public records, it may also help in your investigation. If they are in another jurisdiction, the information will also help bring them to justice.

There are three types of warrants. A first party warrant is one that is written against a person. A third party warrant is one that is written against property. Both of these warrants can be recorded in your court house. However, a third party record is more official and it will show up on a public record. When you are doing your background check, you will know whether you should use a third party record or a first party record.

Warrant records are considered public records. It is best to always know who a person is before they become involved in any legal matter. It would make things easier for everyone if we only had to investigate people if we needed to. People do get themselves into trouble for many reasons; accidents, murder, sex offenses and many other crimes. If someone has a warrant out for their arrest it does not mean they are necessarily involved in the crime, but most criminal background investigations still include a search of public records.
