How Common is Date Rape

Date rape is a form of sexual assault where the victim knows the person committing the deed. Also called acquaintance rape, date rape is a sad case because it means that the victim trusted the perpetrator enough to go out with him and he proceeded to have sexual intercourse with her without her consent

The scary thing is that nearly 80% (4 out of 5 cases) of rapes are date rape situations. Effectively this means that a woman is 4 times more likely to be raped by someone she knows. The only reason why you might not have been aware of just how high these numbers are is because victims are often in denial about what happened and aren’t as eager to open up about it. What’s worse is that most victims don’t report it because they don’t want to blow the whistle on someone the personally know.

The fact of the matter remains though…rape is rape, whichever way it happens, and it’s a crime!

What are the personality traits of someone who commits date rape?

  • They are aggressive and controlling in intimate relationships
  • The tend to choose violence to solve problems
  • They tend to be overly demanding of their partners

Some myths about date rape – TOTALLY BUSTED

Men can’t be raped – although most date rape victims are females, men CAN be victims of date rape.

The victim was dressed provocatively and was looking for sexual action – just because someone wears short or skimpy clothing doesn’t mean that she’s looking for any kind of action, it might just be her mood for the day.

The perp was wasted – sorry but being drunk is definitely not an excuse, a person has morals and should be able to stick to them even while under the influence of alcohol.

He’s a guy. Sex is a guy thing – Men CAN control their sexual urges. Forcing you to have sex with him is a crime any way you look at it.

Rapists LOOK like rapists – wrong, the guy next door, the guy that you work with and even your boyfriend can cross the line. Rapists don’t have a specific profile about them.

What date rape drugs are being used on victims?

1. Rohypnol

Also called rufies, this small white pill easily dissolves in liquid, so it’s a prime “tool” to dose your drink with. The newer version of this pill makes clear liquid turn bright blue and make dark drinks turn cloudy, but in a dark nightclub, it could be hard to spot. It causes you to feel drunk, have trouble speaking and even make you pass out and then you’d be out for a good few hours.

2. GHB

Gamma Hydroxybutyric Acid can be a liquid or a pill used to dose your drink. It can make you feel sleepy, dizzy, cause problems in your breathing and make you pass out. It’s extremely dangerous and overdose on GHB is very common.

3. Ketamine

Special K – as it’s also known – is a drug that causes memory loss, the inability to move and amnesia.
The most date rape drugs get slipped to you via a drink so please be extra vigilant about where you leave your drink and who gave you that drink in the first place.

It is said that about 90 percent of rapes go unreported and in a study conducted by the National Center for the Prevention and Control of Rape, it was found that 92 percent of rape victims knew their attackers. Another study done by the National Institute of Justice showed that approximately 5% of college women were raped per year. That makes for nearly 500 women per year on a campus with 10,000 students that get raped every year.
